Sertich inks multi-year dealTuesday 6/24, 8:16 PM CT
The Avalanche signed Marty Sertich to a multi-year deal Tuesday. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Sertich was acquired from the Stars earlier this month in exchange for a seventh round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft.

Our View: Sertich will be fighting for a roster spot with the Avs and isn't likely to garner any fantasy attention.
Parker re-ups with AvalancheTuesday 6/24, 8:13 PM CT
The Avalanche re-signed Scott Parker to a one-year deal Tuesday. Parker recorded 70 PIM in 25 games last year.

Our View: Parker can pile up minutes in the sin bin, but he offers little else in fantasy.
Boston acquires Boychuk from ColoradoTuesday 6/24, 8:11 PM CT
The Bruins acquired John Boychuk from the Avalanche Tuesday in exchange for forward Matt Hendricks. Boychuk played in four games for the Avalanche last year, holding a plus-1 rating.

Our View: Boychuk didn't have any fantasy value in Colorado, and that won't change now that he's in Boston.
Denis placed on waivers Tuesday 6/24, 1:49 PM CT
Goalie Marc Denis has been placed on waivers by the Lightning, according to TSN.ca. If he clears waivers, he will be bought out by Tampa Bay.

Our View: He was initially brought in to fill the void at goalie left by the exit of Nikolai Khabibulin, but he endured a disappointing stint in Tampa Bay with only 18 wins over 54 games.
Bergeron feels great Tuesday 6/24, 1:34 PM CT
Patrice Bergeron is making favorable progress in his recovery from a serious concussion that limited him to only 10 games of service with Boston in 2007-08, according to the Detroit News. He has begun light skating at home, and he said, "I'm feeling great. I'm back doing full workouts the same as I was doing last year, and in some ways I'd even say I'm ahead of where I was last year. No problem."

Our View: Bergeron is up to 190 pounds, which is close to his intended playing weight. He is seemingly on track to be ready to go by training camp.
Shanahan could be done in New York?Tuesday 6/24, 1:20 PM CT
The Rangers may not have a spot for Brendan Shanahan this season, according to the Detroit News. GM Glen Sather said Shanahan needs to be patient during the free agency period, and added, "Until we know where the pieces are going to fall, he's just going to have to wait and see how it comes out. We're in a position now where we haven't spent our free-agent money and we have some kids coming. I don't want to shut the door early. He knows I'm going to treat him with respect."

Our View: The 39-year old Shanahan could become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Three of his 23 goals in 2007-08 were game-winners.
Raycroft placed on waivers Tuesday 6/24, 1:07 PM CT
Goalie Andrew Raycroft has been placed on waivers by Toronto, according to TSN.ca.

Our View: Raycroft went 2-9-5 over 19 games (16 starts) with the Leafs in 2007-08, and took a back seat to starter Vesa Toskala. He should get scooped up by another club, as he notched 37 wins with Toronto back in 2006-07.
Grant shipped to Nashville Tuesday 6/24, 1:02 PM CT
The Flyers have dealt Triston Grant (and a seventh-round pick in 2009) to the Predators in exchange for defenseman Janne Niskala, according to the AP.

Our View: Grant had 21 points for the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL last season.
Flyers acquire Niskala Tuesday 6/24, 12:56 PM CT
The Flyers have acquired Janne Niskala from the Predators in exchange for forward Triston Grant and a seventh-round pick in 2009, according to the AP.

Our View: The 26-year old Niskala was a fifth-round pick by the Predators in the 2004 draft and had 19 goals and 44 points last year in the AHL.
Hurricanes keep Ruutu Tuesday 6/24, 12:52 PM CT
Tuomo Ruutu has agreed to a one-year deal to remain with the Hurricanes, according to the Miami Herald. He will make $2.25 million next season. GM Jim Rutherford said, "We are happy he'll be back with our team and we hope that he can stay healthy and return to the 20-goal plateau he reached during his rookie season."

Our View: The 25-year old was acquired from the Blackhawks in February in exchange for Andrew Ladd. His production in goals dipped to 10 in 2007-08, but he did reach a new career-high with 22 assists.
Team hits snag with Hordichuk Tuesday 6/24, 11:40 AM CT
The Hurricanes are having difficulty coming to a contract agreement with Darcy Hordichuk, who the team acquired in a trade from the Predators for a future fifth-round draft pick, according to the Raleigh News and Observer. GM Jim Rutherford said, "The fact that we had tried to get a jump on it and he wasn't interested in what we had to say, it would appear we're not getting him."

Our View: If a deal is not worked out with Hordichuk, Carolina would receive a fifth-round pick in 2010. It looks like he will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
Melrose named new Lightning coach Tuesday 6/24, 11:18 AM CT
Barry Melrose has been named the new head coach of the Lightning, according to SI.com.

Our View: He is returning as a coach following 12 years as a television analyst. Melrose coached the Kings from 1992 to 1995, and led the club to the Stanley Cup Finals in his first season.

T.J. Oshie, who was the Blues' first-round draft pick in 2005, is aiming to impress the club during this week's developmental camp, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: He is going to fight hard for a roster spot with the Blues, and knows he needs to make a strong first impression in developmental camp.
Emery clears waivers Tuesday 6/24, 10:18 AM CT
Ray Emery has cleared waivers on Monday, and is now an unrestricted free agent after being bought out by the Senators, according to the AP.

Our View: GM Bryan Murray placed Emery on waivers as he could not find an interested team to deal him to. Emery was once viewed as a future star, but only went 12-13-4 in 2007-08, with a poor 3.11 GAA.
Roberts not expected to re-sign Tuesday 6/24, 9:58 AM CT
Gary Roberts is not expected to re-sign with the Penguins, according to TSN.ca.

Our View: Roberts made $2.5 million in 2007-08, and the team has several players to re-sign, namely Evgeni Malkin, and Roberts doesn't believe the team will have the funds to match his salary with a new deal. The 42-year old will test the market as an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but his value has diminished as he was limited to only 38 games last season due to a broken leg and an ankle sprain, and he may not be able to find a better deal with another club.
Blake looking for extension Tuesday 6/24, 8:10 AM CT
Rob Blake is expected to meet with GM Dean Lombardi this week to discuss a contract extension with the Kings, according to the LA Times.

Our View: The 38-year old could become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, and his best days are clearly behind him, as he only scored nine goals and 22 assists over 71 games in 2007-08.
Nystrom should get new deal Tuesday 6/24, 8:05 AM CT
Eric Nystrom is expected to be offered a new deal to remain with the Flames, according to the Calgary Herald.

Our View: The 25-year old winger made $693,00 in 2007-08, and scored 10 points over 44 games. He was a first-round pick in 2002, but is yet to make an impact.
Wellwood won't likely return to Leafs Tuesday 6/24, 7:57 AM CT
Center Kyle Wellwood won't likely return to Toronto next season, according to the Globe and Mail.

Our View: The 25-year old Wellwood will become a restricted free agent on July 1. A source close to the Leafs reported that the team has no plans to offer him a new deal. It remains to be seen if another team would give him a shot, because he is only 5-10 180 pounds, and suffered through two injury-shortened seasons.
Sundin on Rangers' radar? Tuesday 6/24, 7:34 AM CT
Mats Sundin is believed to be on the Rangers' radar, according to the NY Post. Glen Sather is considering a go-for-broke tandem of Sundin and Jaromir Jagr in 2008-09.

Our View: Sundin previously commented that New York is his preferred destination. If the 37-year old Sundin does land with the Rangers, then Chris Drury would likely move from his front-line center spot out to the wing.
Sakic won't decide before July 1 Tuesday 6/24, 7:17 AM CT
Joe Sakic won't make a decision regarding his playing status before July 1, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: Sakic made $6.75 million in 2007-08 and likely would continue to make something in that range in a new deal. If Sakic decided to retire before July 1, Colorado GM Francois Giguere would have that much more money freed up under the salary cap. If Sakic retired well after July 1, the top NHL free agents could be gone. While he could compromise the team's free agency spending plans, VP Jean Martineau stated that Sakic has earned the right to take his time with his decision.
Stuart experiencing soreness Tuesday 6/24, 7:09 AM CT
Brad Stuart, who could become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, is experiencing soreness in his shoulder, according to the Detroit News. GM Ken Holland said it wasn't an issue during the playoffd and really just popped up out of the blue.

Our View: The team would like to bring him back, but not for the $3.5 million he earned last season with the Kings. The shoulder ailment will delay the team from re-signing him as well. The Kings reportedly would like him back if he hits the market.
Detroit will sign a goalie after July 1 Tuesday 6/24, 7:04 AM CT
Team GM Ken Holland stated that he will sign a goalie after July 1, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: They will seek a backup for Chris Osgood, or a young goalie they can develop with their AHL club.
Chelios to meet with Holland Tuesday 6/24, 7:00 AM CT
Chris Chelios will meet with team GM Ken Holland this week, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: He is expected to play another season in Detroit, namely to mentor the young defensemen on the club. Holland wants to make it clear that he will have a reduced role on the ice before he inks a deal.
