NEWSBREAKERS NHL
Flames sign Bourque Friday 7/4, 7:34 PM CT
Rene Bourque has inked a deal with the Flames after being acquired from the Blackhawks earlier in the week, according to the AP. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Our View: Bourque chipped in 10 goals and 14 assists (24 points) over 62 games with Chicago in 2007-08. Two of his goals were game-winners. He was a solid signing for Calgary, and could challenge 20 goals if he gets enough ice time this season.
Canucks sign Cullen Friday 7/4, 7:28 PM CT
The Canucks have signed center Mark Cullen to a one-year deal, according to the AP. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View: The 29-year-old spent last season with Grand Rapids of the AHL, while recording 16 goals and 31 assists over 59 contests. He last appeared with the Flyers in 2006-07, and did not register any points over three games. He was added by Vancouver solely for depth up the middle.
Wishart traded to LightningFriday 7/4, 5:16 PM CT
Sharks' defensemen Ty Wishart and Matt Carle have been traded to the Lightning in exchange for Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich, according to TSN.

Our View: Wishart is a top blueline prosect, and was the 16th overall pick in the 2006 entry draft. The 20-year old racked up 67 points over 72 games in the Western Hockey League last season, with a plus-seven rating.
Rivet dealt to Sabres Friday 7/4, 4:51 PM CT
Defenseman Craig Rivet, and a seventh-round pick in 2010, have been dealt from the Sharks to the Sabres in exchange for second-round selections in the 2009 and 2010 drafts, according to TSN. Sabres' GM Darcy Regier said, "We are very excited to add such a quality veteran player to our roster. He is a great character player that will provide our club added leadership and experience."

Our View: Rivet became expendable to the Sharks following their acquisitions of Rob Blake and Dan Boyle. He should prove to be an asset to the Sabres, as he contributed five goals and 30 assists over 74 games for San Jose in 2007-08, with 104 penalty minutes.
Leafs ink Grabovsky Friday 7/4, 4:12 PM CT
The Leafs have inked former Canadiens' center Mikhail Grabovsky to a one-year deal, according to TSN. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View: The 24-year-old recorded three goals and six assists over 24 games with Montreal in 2007-08.
Bernier traded to CanucksFriday 7/4, 2:27 PM CT
Steve Bernier was traded from the Buffalo Sabres to the Vancouver Canucks for a second-round draft pick in 2010 and a third-round pick in 2009.

Our View: The 23-year-old Bernier put up 32 points in 76 games last year, and has some fantasy value. If he can keep improving, a 20 goal season is certainly in reach.
Caps want Fedorov backFriday 7/4, 1:17 PM CT
The Washington Capitals would like to retain the services of 38-year-old Sergei Fedorov , according to the Washington Post. "We'll continue to talk to him, but we're pretty confident that we'll get something done here," General Manager George McPhee said

Our View: Fedorov only scored 11 goals in 68 games last season, and his days of being an impact player in fantasy hockey are about over.
Penguins going after free agent from FinlandFriday 7/4, 11:38 AM CT
The Pittsburgh Penguins are making an attempt to sign Finnish free agent Janne Pesonen, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He had 34 goals and 44 assists in 56 games with Karpat in Finland's Elite League a year ago.

Our View: The numbers speak well for his potential, and if the 26-year-old can see some minutes with Crosby or Malkin, he has potential value in fantasy leagues next season.
Montreal inks DenisFriday 7/4, 11:30 AM CT
Marc Denis has signed a one-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens, according to The Sports Network.

Our View: Denis was terrible for the Lightning last season, and because this is a two-way contract, he can be sent to the minors easily. Don't consider him an option in fantasy leagues.
Kalinin joins RangersFriday 7/4, 9:49 AM CT
Dmitri Kalinin has signed a one-year deal with the New York Rangers, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Kalinin had just one goal in 46 games and should not be an option for fantasy hockey players.
Lukowich part of Boyle dealFriday 7/4, 9:45 AM CT
Brad Lukowich will join Dan Boyle in moving from the Tampa Bay Lightning to the San Jose Sharks, according to TSN.com.

Our View: Lukowich had only 7 points and was a -15 last season and his fantasy value is non-existent.
Carle dealt to TampaFriday 7/4, 9:42 AM CT
Matt Carle has been moved to Tampa Bay as part of the trade sending Dan Boyle to San Jose, according to TSN.com.

Our View: Carle does not have much fantasy value at this time, as he only put up 15 points in 62 games, along with 26 penalty minutes.
Boyle dealt to San JoseFriday 7/4, 9:38 AM CT
Dan Boyle has waived his no-trade clause and has been dealt to the San Jose Sharks, according to TSN.com. The Lightning are said to be receiving defenseman Matt Carle, a first round draft pick, a prospect and a 4th round pick in return.

Our View: Boyle is a very good defenseman whose numbers should get even better now that he is a Shark. His +/- will likely see the greatest increase with Evgeni Nabokov in goal behind him.
Canadiens still after SundinFriday 7/4, 9:21 AM CT
The Montreal Canadiens and general manager Bob Gainey still believe they can land free agent Mats Sundin, according to Slam! Sports.

Our View: Sundin is taking his time deciding whether or not he even wants to play this season. If he does, he is a top fantasy player, as he put up 32 goals and 46 assists last season, and has a +/- of +17.
Morrison will not be back in VancouverFriday 7/4, 9:12 AM CT
Brendan Morrison will not be back with the Canucks, according to the Vancouver Providence. He is expected to reject the one-year, $1.9-million offer the team made.

Our View: Morrison only played 39 games a season ago, and put up 25 points. The 32-year-old is a viable fantasy option, although how valuable he may be depends on where he winds up.
Coyotes sign LessardFriday 7/4, 8:57 AM CT
The Phoenix Coyotes have signed Francis Lessard to a one-year contract, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: He has only played in 91 career NHL games and spent all of last season in the minor leagues, so he has no value in fantasy hockey.
Naslund a RangerFriday 7/4, 8:09 AM CT
Markus Naslund has signed a two-year deal worth $8 million to play for the New York Rangers, according to Slam! Sports.

Our View: Naslund is still a useful fantasy player, but he is 35 years of age, and his point total has dipped in recent years, so he is clearly not what he once was.
Jagr signs with Russian teamFriday 7/4, 8:06 AM CT
Jaromir Jagr has signed to play with Avangard Omsk, a team in Russia, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The deal is reportedly for two years.

Our View: There goes one fantasy option. Jagr wasn't the dynamic player he had been, but he could still tally enough points to be a valuable element to a fantasy team.
