It was as exciting as fans could ask, but in the end, the greatest in the game showed why he's granted such prestigious status as Tiger Woods took his 14th PGA Major title, defeating Rocco Mediate to win this year's US Open at Torrey Pines.
Our View: Woods was up by as much as three strokes during the match, but Mediate charged. After shooting bogey on #10, Mediate converted three consecutive birdies to tie it up and later found yet another birdie on #15 to take a one-stroke lead. Tiger then bounced back with a birdie on #18, just as he had to force today's playoff, pushing the twosome to sudden death. From there Tiger converted three precise shots to get within inches of the hole at #7, the first hole of sudden death, while Mediate found the rough with each of his first two strokes and failed to convert a long par putt to force additional holes. This gives Woods yet another major trophy in the case, his third at the US Open, and now he stands just four major wins behind the record 18 posted by the great Jack Nicklaus. |
